  • General requirements for POA

Our office provides notary public services for various documents, including powers of attorney intended for use in Poland. A power of attorney is a written authorization allowing someone else to act on your behalf. To prepare one, we require the personal details of both the grantor and the attorney-in-fact, a valid ID (Polish or U.S. passport, state ID, or driver’s license), and, for real estate matters, information about the property. The document must be signed in the presence of a notary and, in some cases, a witness.

 Hague Apostille Convention

Certain documents, including powers of attorney, vital records, school transcripts, and diplomas, may also require an apostille, which certifies the document’s authenticity for use in countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention (officially: Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents). To obtain an apostille, we require either the original certified copy of the document or a document that is properly notarized. State-issued apostilles are provided by the state where the document was issued (e.g., Illinois cannot apostille a Wisconsin document), while federal documents, such as Certificates of Naturalization, receive apostilles from the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., or a U.S. District Court.
