Sworn Translations

A sworn translator (in Polish: tłumaczprzysięgły) is a language professional officially authorized to provide certified translations of documents and texts to be used by Polish governmental agencies and courts of law. This is a regulated and formal credential in the Polish legal system, distinct from ordinary translation work.

The Minister of Justice in Poland maintains and publishes an official List of Sworn Translators (Lista tłumaczyprzysięgłych). This register includes each translator’s name, language pair, and contact information. Only individuals entered on this list may legally provide certified (sworn) translations in Poland. The list is periodically updated and publicly accessible. Sworn translators can translate and certify a wide range of materials, including but not limited to: birth, marriage, death, and education certificates; court and administrative decisions; contracts and notarial deeds, powers of attorney and affidavits. When a sworn translator certifies a translation, they attach their seal and signature, affirming that the translation is complete, accurate, and faithful to the original.

Documents for translation may be delivered to our office in person, sent as clear, legible scans of all pages by email, or shipped to our office as originals. If an apostille is required, please obtain the apostille before sending the documents to us. As a helpful tip, apostilles are sometimes attached in a way that makes the original document difficult to scan, so we recommend scanning the birth, marriage, or other vital record before attaching the apostille. Please note that the translation must exactly match the source document. If a document is translated and pages are later added, removed, or altered, the translation becomes invalid and must be redone.

Becoming a sworn translator in Poland involves meeting specific legal and professional requirements. Candidates must demonstrate an excellent command of both Polish and at least one foreign language. Typically, they hold a university degree in translation studies, philology, or another relevant field, although non-degree professionals with equivalent competence may also qualify.Prospective sworn translators must pass a state examination administered by the Ministry of Justice. The exam tests translation skills, legal and administrative terminology, and understanding of procedures related to certified translations.After passing the exam, candidates submit an application to the Ministry to be entered on the official List of Sworn Translators.Once approved, the translator takes a formal oath and is officially registered. From that point forward, they may issue certified translations with legal validity throughout Poland.
